The Show Must Go Online
Ship’s Company Theatre has been producing theatre and providing arts programming for 36 years in Parrsboro. Throughout a summer we see thousands of people from all over Nova Scotia and beyond come through our doors to check out The Ship. The Ship is a place to enjoy the arts with your community. At its core, it is a place to gather. Now we find ourselves at a point where we need to help ensure the health and safety of our community and our long-standing supporters by not gathering. This means Ship’s Company Theatre has to postpone its planned summer season of 2020. We definitely have heavy hearts around it but please know this decision has been deliberated over a lengthy time with many factors taken into consideration, especially the health, safety and peace of mind of our audiences, cast, crew, and staff.
Instead, we offer you an online Friday night line-up for July and August you won’t want to miss! Starting July 10, we’re giving you up-close and intimate evenings of music with some of the most acclaimed Atlantic Canadian musicians as well as sharing powerful Atlantic Canadian stories through unique readings and interviews with a wide variety of talented writers. We are thankful that we can provide this new summer season to you, especially within these challenging times.
Ship’s Company will debut its brand new Shipwright Sessions this summer. From published award-winning plays to still-in-development musicals, the Shipwright Sessions give you the opportunity to hear excerpts of these works from the playwright themselves combined with a close-up look at the writer through mini-interviews led by Ship’s artistic director Richie Wilcox. The Shipwright Sessions, which are free to the public, feature Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story by Beau Dixon, Mind The Light by Gabrielle Papillon, Silence: Mabel and Alexander Graham Bell by Trina Davies and Mi’kmaq Stories: Past and Present by Catherine Martin, Trevor Gould and Shalan Joudry with a reading by Shalan Joudry. For more information on the Shipwright Sessions, click here.
Ship’s Company will also offer Music Nights of four concerts through live streams on our social media platforms. The Music Nights will also be free to the public and feature Parrsboro favourite Ryan Cook, the celebrated and dynamic Acadian trio Vishtèn, the internationally acclaimed guitarist Don Ross and PEI ’s Juno award-winning folk gem, Catherine MacLellan. Lastly, we need to extend our gratitude to the people who have already become members of Ship’s and generously offered donations this year! The ongoing commitment and support of our membership and donors have always played a large financial part in the Ship’s legacy and within this time it is more important than ever. If you would like to become a member of Ship’s Company Theatre and keep up to date on what we are doing or if you would like to donate, click here.
Thank you to our funding bodies Arts Nova Scotia, Canada Council for the Arts, Playwrights Guild of Canada, Municipality of Cumberland, and Canadian Heritage.
And thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement. We look forward to having you join us on Fridays! Take care. Be kind. Be well.
